Abraham ben Joseph of Orleans

12th-century French Tosafist

Abraham ben Joseph of Orleans was a prominent figure in 12th-century French Judaism, known for his contributions as a Tosafist. Born into a family of notable scholars, he was the son of Joseph Bekhor Shor and the brother of Saadia Bekhor Shor. This lineage suggests that Abraham was part of a larger tradition of Jewish learning and scholarship.

Abraham's work as a Tosafist is evident in his interpretations of the Talmud, which have been widely referenced in the Tosafot. His commentaries are quoted multiple times, indicating the significance of his insights and the esteem in which they were held by his contemporaries. Some scholars have also proposed that Abraham may be identical with another figure, Abraham ben Rabbi Joce, although this identification is not universally accepted. Regardless, Abraham ben Joseph of Orleans remains an important figure in the history of Jewish scholarship, particularly in the development of Tosafist thought.
