Aryeh Leib of Shpola

Hasidic leader in Ukraine (1725–1811)

Aryeh Leib of Shpola, also known as Yehuda Leib of Shpola, was a prominent Hasidic leader in Ukraine, active from 1725 to 1811. He gained recognition as a miracle-worker and faith healer, earning him a significant following in the region. Based in Shpola, Ukraine, he became known affectionately as the Shpoler Zeide. His spiritual development was influenced by notable figures, including the Baal Shem Tov and the Mezrticher Maagid, under whom he studied.

As a member of the third generation of Hasidism in Ukraine, Aryeh Leib of Shpola played a notable role in the movement's development. Some sources refer to him as Reb Leib Sara's, although the accuracy of this attribution is subject to speculation. A significant aspect of his leadership was his opposition to Nachman of Breslov, whose new Chassidish movement he criticized. Through his teachings and actions, Aryeh Leib of Shpola left a lasting impact on the Hasidic community in Ukraine, cementing his place as an important figure in the history of Judaism.
