Mordechai Twersky

Mordechai Twersky, also known as Motele, was a prominent Ukrainian rabbi who played a significant role in the Chernobyl Hasidic dynasty. As the son of Rabbi Menachem Nachum Twersky of Chernobyl, Mordechai Twersky succeeded his father to become the second rebbe of the dynasty. The Twersky family surname is derived from the Russian city of Tver, although according to Hasidic tradition, it is connected to the city of Tiberias.

Mordechai Twersky's legacy is notable for the numerous branches of Hasidism that emerged from his family. Seven of his eight sons went on to become rebbes, founding and leading various Hasidic dynasties. These include the Skver, Chernobyl, and Rachmastrivka branches, among others. Through his sons, Mordechai Twersky's influence extended far beyond his own community, shaping the development of Hasidism in Ukraine and beyond. His family's continued leadership in the Hasidic movement is a testament to his enduring impact on Jewish tradition and culture.
