Sabbateans

Followers of Sabbatai Zevi

The Sabbateans are a group of Jewish adherents who followed the teachings and messianic claims of Sabbatai Zevi, a prominent Ottoman Jewish rabbi and Kabbalist. Born in 1626, Zevi gained a significant following during his lifetime, particularly after being proclaimed the Jewish Messiah in 1666 by Nathan of Gaza. This proclamation marked a pivotal moment in the development of the Sabbatean movement, as Zevi's followers believed him to be the long-awaited savior of the Jewish people.

As a collective, the Sabbateans comprised a diverse range of Jewish followers, disciples, and believers who were drawn to Zevi's charismatic leadership and eschatological teachings. Although Zevi's own life was marked by controversy and eventual conversion to Islam in 1676, his legacy continued to inspire and influence his followers. The Sabbatean movement remains an important chapter in the history of Judaism, reflecting the complex and often fraught dynamics of messianic expectation and religious devotion within the Jewish tradition.
